3 years ago I start a website call The Howll and is dedicate to review records and books. You can find rock, metal, jazz, funk, punk and most of all the subgenre they can offer. Books are focus also in music; biography, photography, history and humor.
During these years I notice that my way of listening music is constantly changing. I used to take my headphones and listening music everywhere, in the park, office and public transport. I realice that I was using the music to ignore my surroundings and I though; I’m not given enough respect to the bands I like. I changed my routine listening music only at home and in the car.
In the first part of this new routine I was listened music before I start working, during and at the end of the day. I work as creative copywriter in a publicity agency so my music was the bridge start to end in my creative and inspirational process.
One day I had this crazy and chaotic day and by the end of it, I noticed that I didn’t used music. My ideas were good and more clear as I was listened to music. So I start working without it.
So you may think ¿ is music a distraction in my creativity?, no, Once again I was not paying attention to my work and the music.
Normally I grab a record put it in the turntable and sit in my desk and start to watch the jacket, inner sleeve and read the notes. Then I start to work and the I return to same process mentioned a couple of words behind.
One friday I decided to doing it at midnight. So I set an alarm 10 minutes before midnight so I can get ready. The night was one of the most amazing and unique experiences that I had.
I enjoy my records as I never before. I was just sitting in the floor with my headphones and the jacket in my hand. Reading over and over again the notes, the lyrics and losing myself in the covers. I repeat the same thing the rest of the weekend.
I decide to call it Midnight Whisper, because while everything is quite the only sound in my ears is my music. And during the day my mind was more conscious about what I heard last night helping me to be more creative and focus on my ideas.
Probably you already do this, if not I invite you to do it and loose yourself in the midnight whisper. If you want to try it just turn off the lights and your smartphone. Only keep a lamp to light your turntable and immerse in the music.
